This study wants to convey the message that as human beings we are not locked to a single system of beliefs. Because we are rational we are able to open our doors to other ways of thinking that might work better in different contexts. Some beliefs and values are so deeply attached to us that we see them as unchangeable, and I accept that, but at the same time others may need to be modified within the course of our lives. Having the mentality of embracing change and creating stability is what will allow us to grow, not only as parents and as immigrants, but also as American citizens.

Recognizing that we all have trained incapacities that block our visions of the world and our capacities to challenge what we take for granted is very important. As immigrants we can find strength and power from becoming open to breaking free of trained incapacities, learning new orientations, and becoming pious to new systems of beliefs that, far from limiting us, expand our views through the development of bilingual-bicultural and transnational identities.

My study represents an expansion of Burke's identity concepts to shed light on the immigrant Latino parents' acculturation experience, particularly in the challenges of communicating with their second generation children. This is my most valuable scholarly contribution: the way of seeing the first generation immigrant parents' impious experience as one of adjusting to and creating new orientations and overcoming trained incapacities.
