Thesis (Ph.D.)--Grand Canyon University, 2017.
The purpose of this quantitative correlational and causal-comparative study was to examine the relationship of stereotype threat and decision-making in non-STEM domains, using working memory capacity as a moderator, for female systems engineers. The study used stereotype threat as the foundational theory. A total of 25 full-time female systems engineers, members of the Maryland INCOSE chapters (Southern Maryland and Chesapeake), participated in this study. Participants completed the OSAPN to establish working memory capacity, the SCQ to measure their awareness of the stigmatized group to which they below, a writing task to prime or defeat stereotype threat, and the IGT to measure real-world decision-making (non-STEM). Pearson's correlation revealed no significant correlations between stereotype threat susceptibility and decision-making or working memory capacity and decision-making. The stepwise multiple regression results were significant, F(1,23) = 7.26, p = .013, R2 = 0.24, indicating that approximately 24% of the variance in IGT score is explainable by OSPAN score, SCQ Score, and interaction between stereotype threat group and working memory. Result of the independent samples t-test was significant, t(23) = 2.80, p = .010, suggesting that the mean of IGT score was significantly different between the stereotype threat defeat and stereotype threat prime categories of Stereotype Group. This study was conducted to begin closing the knowledge gap existing for working professionals, more specifically female systems engineers. Findings of this study provide valuable data about relationships between job experiences and the spill over into un-related decision-making situations.
