Thesis (M.A.)--Mississippi College, 2016.
Shakespeare has long been a part of secondary curricula, but Herman Melville is often ignored, especially his classic, Moby-Dick. With the implementation of the new Common Core State Standards in most every state comes an opportunity to pair the only author mandated by the standards, Shakespeare, with an author barely even mentioned, Melville. Despite the controversy generated by the new standards, instructors can meet the goals of a heightened emphasis on connections and critical thinking by exploring new approaches to classic literature. This work advocates teaching two canonical authors in tandem and exploring the connections between Shakespeare and Melville through close reading and comparison of the persuasive language of prophecy in Macbeth and Moby-Dick, as well as the persuasive troop-rallying rhetoric in Henry V and Moby-Dick. .
