Thesis (Ed.D.)--Northern Kentucky University, 2013.
The purpose of this action research study was to answer this question: Will the use of intentional storytelling increase retention and application in a data driven business environment? The study was conducted at the corporate headquarters of a Midwest manufacturing company. Monthly communication meetings are conducted in which the president presents a business summary while another leader speaks on a specific aspect of the business to update the salaried workforce. In each meeting, a large amount of information is provided through PowerPoint, charts, and graphs. Potentially, information was given in such a technical manner that listeners could not understand, retain, or apply the material. The study involved four of these meetings -- the first and third presented as normal while the second and fourth included purposefully injected illustrations, analogies, and word pictures. As a result of intentional storytelling, the listeners retained more and integrated the information into their work.
