The purpose of this qualitative multiple-case study was to investigate specific barriers faced by medical laboratory technicians (MLTs) during articulation to the baccalaureate level. As these associate-level students attempt vertical transfer into bachelor's programs, they face unique barriers to articulation dependent upon demographics, social and economic status, geographic location, and receiving institution degree requirements. The target population was community college MLT program graduates who subsequently obtained a bachelor's degree and applied to American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) for the Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) Board of Certification (BOC) examination between 2007 and 2012. A purposeful sample of 1,227 MLT to MLS articulates was invited to participate in an online questionnaire, and Dedoose software aided in pattern matching to identify emergent themes. Four major themes emerged: (a) overcoming time constraints to meet school, work, and family obligations; (b) overcoming financial burdens of financial need coupled with decreased financial production; (c) inability of associate level courses to transfer towards bachelor degree requirements; and (d) lack of professional support. Five minor themes emerged: (a) challenges with an extended time period between AD and BD completion; (b) lack of MLS bridge program options; (c) challenges obtaining and completing clinical rotations; (d) difficultly transitioning from MLT to MLS practice due to coworker and employer bias; and (e) difficulty in understanding and meeting ASCP requirements to sit for the MLS BOC. Recommendations for practice included increased availability and awareness of MLS bridge programs, presence and perception of employer support as flexible scheduling, tuition reimbursement, and acknowledgment of achievement, and expanded awareness of ASCP specific, non-conflicting requirements. Recommendations for future research included: a quantitative descriptive study to determine successful articulation and curriculum alignment practices; a qualitative phenomenological study to explore MLT and MLS transitional periods; and a quantitative correlational study to assess barriers and vertical transfer success.
