This study examined the reliability and construct validity of the Onochie Nigerian Cultural Life Styles Inventory (ONCLSI) used to measure the type and degree of acculturation in Nigerian Americans. Participants were recruited using a non-random snowball sampling method employing social media and network of family and friends. The sample of N= 137 participants (42 males and 95 females) completed the ONCLSI and a Demographic Background Questionnaire. Four hypotheses were tested and all hypotheses were supported in this study. The first hypothesis measured the internal consistency reliability of the ONCLSI and the results produced a significant Cronbach's alpha coefficient of .778. Hypotheses two, three, and four were tested to assess the construct validity of the ONCLSI. Hypothesis two predicted that with succeeding generations (first and second generation) U.S. Oriented acculturation scores increased, and Nigerian Oriented acculturation scores decreased. Hypothesis three predicted that among first generation immigrants, as length of time living in the U.S. increased, U.S. Oriented acculturation scores increased, and Nigerian Oriented acculturation scores decreased. The fourth hypothesis predicted that among first generation immigrants, as age at entry into the U.S. increased, U.S. Oriented acculturation scores decreased, and Nigerian Oriented acculturation scores increased. The results of this study supported the construct validity of the ONCLSI. Implications of the findings for scholars and practitioners, summary of limitations of the study, as well as recommendations for future research, are discussed.
