Thesis (Psy.D.)--The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, 2017.
Children and their families are susceptible to developing pediatric medical traumatic stress (PMTS) after the child sustains injury, illness, or medical treatment (National Child Traumatic Stress Network, 2004). An extensive literature review found a gap in the literature for the mind- body treatment of children experiencing medical trauma. Trauma focused cognitive-behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) has the most empirical support for its efficacy in treating emotional and behavioral difficulties, as well as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD; i.e., Bisson et al., 2007). In addition, tai chi helps children improve their coordination, mental strength, balance and posture, as well as their mental and physical health (Tai Chi Productions, 2014). This dissertation presents a needs assessment and program development study targeting the treatment and prevention of PMTS. The results of this study concluded in the development of Anchor, a prevention/intervention trauma-informed tai chi program for children and their families suffering from PMTS, as a mind-body treatment method to address aspects of both physical and mental health. This program is unique in that it ties together empirically supported TF-CBT to address symptoms of trauma with the health and relaxation benefits of tai chi to reduce symptoms of PMTS in children and their families.
