Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Missouri - Columbia, 1989.
This researcher investigated what classroom teachers believed about the elementary art curriculum and how they implemented it in the two counties of Kaohsiung and Pingtung in Taiwan. The focus was on teachers' beliefs about what concepts should be emphasized in the art curriculum, what concepts were emphasized in the curriculum guide, and how the art curriculum was actually implemented by elementary classroom teachers. The content of the Taiwan elementary art curriculum guide, the "Curriculum Standard", was analyzed and compared with the main concepts of American public school art curricula.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The focus was on teachers' beliefs about what concepts should be emphasized in the art curriculum, what concepts were emphasized in the curriculum guide, and how the art curriculum was actually implemented by elementary classroom teachers. The content of the Taiwan elementary art curriculum guide, the "Curriculum Standard", was analyzed and compared with the main concepts of American public school art curricula.

The researcher collected the necessary data by means of a questionnaire survey. He investigated teachers' beliefs about ten curriculum concepts, teachers' perceptions of the emphasis of these concepts in the curriculum guide, and the teachers' classroom practices in regard to ten specified curriculum implementation variables.

The study resulted in the following conclusions: (1) Classroom teachers believed that in the elementary art curriculum greater emphasis should be placed on meeting children's needs than on the learning of art and art culture. (2) They perceived that the "Curriculum Standard" also placed greater emphasis on children's needs than on the nature of subject. (3) Classroom teachers believed that they had received the value of art instruction and were interested in art, and that their students were quite interested in art. They felt that they were only moderately successful in implementing the art curriculum; they were not highly competent in art instruction; their students' ability in art was only moderate; the instructional resources other than materials for drawing or painting were not sufficient; and the school and community provided few opportunities for children to learn about art. (4) Classroom teachers' beliefs about the art curriculum were closely related to the content of the present "Curriculum Standard", however, the teachers did not believe they had fully implemented the art curriculum.

The researcher made recommendations for further research and for courses of action related to curriculum implementation, including improvements in the "Curriculum Standard" and improvements in teacher training programs.
