Thesis (Ph.D.)--Yale University, 1988.
This thesis investigates the coral fauna and community ecology of corals on the fringing reefs of southern Taiwan. A total of 235 species of scleractinians, 47 species of alcyonaceans, and 10 species of hydrozoan corals were identified. The coral fauna of southern Taiwan shows strong affinity to that of the Indo-West Pacific in general.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Analyses of coral interspecific interactions were mainly based on field observations. Competitive relationships among coral species are often complicated. In many cases, especially when different mechanisms are involved, coral interactions are often intransitive.

Coral communities on the fringing reefs of southern Taiwan were studied by a line-transect sampling method. Six sites were selected for this sampling and a total of 161 lines, with 25 to 30 lines from each site, were surveyed. On average, corals belonging to the three taxonomic groups given above cover from 33 to 50% of the reef surface. Comparison of faunal composition among study sites reveals two types of coral communities. The type I community exists in protected areas, is mainly composed of scleractinian corals; alcyonaceans contribute less than 6% to the total coral cover in this type. The type II community exists in exposed areas, is comprised of more than 50% alcyonaceans and less than 50% scleractinians in total coral cover. At the within reef scale, four types of coral communities were recognized, i.e., (1) the reef margin and reef front, (2) an alcyonacen-dominated community, (3) the foliaceous coral community, and (4) the current track community. Among them, only the foliaceous coral community and the alcyonacean dominated community have distinct faunal uniformity. The foliaceous coral community exists on protected reef slopes (15-25 m in depth) and is dominated by foliaceous scleractinians. The alcyonacean-dominated community exists at intermediate depths (5-15 m) in exposed areas and is dominated by fleshy alcyonaceans.

The dynamics of coral communities were studied by tracing the changes of coral cover on eight 1m x 5m quadrats. Severe changes of coral communities were caused by two successive strong typhoons in September-October, 1987. Other disturbances such as algal blooms and sedimentation caused relatively restricted damage to the coral communities. These disturbances are the major sources of spatial and temporal heterogeneity which contribute to the coexistence of species and the high diversity of coral communities in southern Taiwan.
