This study examined 60 English narratives and 60 Chinese narratives produced by 60 college students in Taiwan. The protocols were generated under controlled conditions. The Pear Story Film was shown to elicit data for analysis on the basis of the Stein and Glenn (1979) story grammar. The purpose was to identify episode structures of English and Chinese narratives.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Both quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis were adopted. The number of complete episodes in English and Chinese was calculated, and correlations were computed. It was found that competence in writing a complete episode is both cognitive and linguistic function. Chronology was the invariable commonality of structures of English and Chinese narratives.

Qualitative analysis showed that both English and Chinese narratives conformed to the model of narrative structures in the Stein and Glenn grammar. A narrative consisted of a setting and an episode system. Setting included time, place, protagonist, and habitual activity. The episode system comprised the seven episodes presented in the film.

A complete episode was defined as action sequences consisting of initiating event, attempt, and direct consequences. It was found that English narratives contained fewer complete episodes than Chinese narratives. By examining the production strategies of the subjects, it was found that a story schema guided their narrative production. But the story schema interacted with bottom-up data in terms of entitles that built up an episode.

The findings support some claims made by proponents of contrastive rhetoric in ESL. Commonalities between L1 and L2 may transfer from L1 to L2. But interference may come from literary styles in L1 and other cultural factors. As a result of the study, an integration of product-based and processes-based approaches was recommended for future ESL research.
