Thesis (Ph.D.)--Indiana University, 1989.
Since the nineteenth century, philosophers such as Nietzsche, Heidegger, Wittgenstein and Derrida have argued in one way or another that linguistic paradigms reflect and shape the structure of thinking, that grammatical categories represent conceptual categories man imposes on reality. Language not only embodies, it systematizes the way reality is apprehended by the user of language. Since language is closely related to the world view of a culture, it can be accounted for by the differences in the treatment of poetic language and of how meaning is generated in poetry.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The study is centered around the discussion of the philosophical and linguistic implications underlying two modes in Chinese and English lyric poetry: the Ontological and the Metaphorical Modes. In the first half of the study, which is theoretical in nature, we consider some of the central ideas set forth by philosophers and critics in both poetic traditions, with particular concern for how truth and meaning are generated in poetry.

The second half of the study is devoted to the discussion of a number of carefully selected Chinese and English poems to explore (1) the differences in the basic ontological assumptions between an essentially holistic Chinese ontology and the Western metaphysical dualism prevalent ever since Aristotle's time; and (2) how meaning is generated in poetry in the Metaphorical Mode in both traditions. In the conclusion, we consider the views of some philosophers and semantic theorists that poetry, metaphor in particular, is the indispensable remedy to the interpretation of human experiences. It is indeed a means to do away with the limitations set by dualistic thinking and a way of achieving the experience of "oneness" at a lyrical moment.
