Literary scholarship has been traditionally conceived of as a discipline whose function is to facilitate a "proper" understanding of texts, a position which this dissertation challenges. By exploring significant acts of misunderstanding in the making of literary history and ultimately affirming them as legitimate and necessary, this study does not intend to celebrate misunderstanding indiscriminately. By "misunderstanding" is meant a view of a text or a cultural event by a "receiver" community which differs in important ways from the view of the same text or event in the community of its "origins." Employing current Western literary theories, such as post-structuralism, reception theory, and ideological criticism, this study examines Ezra Pound's "discovery" of the Chinese ideograph, which is widely thought to result from a misunderstanding of Chinese language and culture. Western modernism is thus founded upon a cultural misunderstanding, even if an exceedingly fruitful one. Following Pound's endeavors, the Menglong poets in China after the Cultural Revolution called for a replacement of traditional Chinese poetics by the importation of Western modernism. Both the Menglong poets and the critics who repudiated their "non-revolutionary" poetry, however, "misprised" Pound's aesthetics. Such acts of "misprision," nevertheless, are to be appreciated, not regretted, since they offer one way to understanding Chinese-Western literary relations. They are thus vital forces in the making of intra- and inter-cultural literary history.Subjects--Topical Terms:
