Shan-tao's Pure Land thought is most clearly expressed in his text, the Kuan-ching-shu (Commentary on the Mediation Sutra), in which he espouses nien-fo (chanting the name of Buddha Amitabha) as the sole agent for salvation. Unlike other traditional Buddhist scholars, he was not concerned with the salvation of the elite, but with that of the masses. This thesis, therefore, describes the life of Shan-tao, the historical circumstances which motivated him to become the champion of the masses, the relevance of nien-fo in that process and the meaning of faith within the context of Chinese Pure Land thought up until the time of Shan-tao. The consistent theme throughout his work, and that which distinguished his thought from his contemporaries', was the acceptance of the fallibility of man.
