This study has found that before 1919, the revival movement contributed toward a rapid growth of the Chinese church. However, between 1919 and 1929, the New Culture Movement and the anti-Christian activities associated with it forced Christian leaders to reconsider the relevancy of their faith to the national situation. Thus, a new understanding of revival as the regeneration of society through the imitation of Jesus' exemplary life emerged within the liberal wing of the church. This ran into direct conflict with the conservative view which insisted that revivals applied basically to individuals and that salvation through Jesus' atoning death was its basis. As the Chinese church experienced widespread revivals between 1929 and 1937, these two views of revival led to a polarization within the Chinese church. The liberals focussed their attention on the building of a perfect social order while the conservatives concentrated on preaching personal salvation and grossly neglected the social needs of the country. This trend continued into the war-time period that began in 1937. Consequently, Chinese Protestantism was divided into two camps, each preaching a different gospel.

The revival movement, as a result, failed to produce the vitality desired by its leaders. The liberal camp, involving a majority of the Protestant population, was unable to provide the Chinese society with a uniquely religious message. The conservatives' emphasis on personal salvation and revived lifestyle also brought little impact on the society. Hence, these two contrasting views must by synthesized in order to construct a theology of revival which could bring the impact of the saving message of Christianity to every aspect of life, be it personal or social.
