The United States currently faces many challenges--cultural, political, and economic--both at home and abroad. It is important for Americans to obtain a broader and deeper view of international issues and problems through the teaching of foreign languages and culture. 520 $a The University of California, Berkeley was the first institution of higher education in the country to recognize the importance of the Orient to America's future and cultural enrichment. This began with the endowment of the Agassiz professorship of Oriental Languages and Literature by Edward Tompkins in 1872 to promote American business through the teaching of Far Eastern languages and literature.
520 $a The purpose of this study was to trace the historical development of Chinese studies in one major university in the United States, the University of California, Berkeley, through the examination of the holders of the Agassiz Professorship from its inception to 1985. Primary sources, including oral histories, were used to develop academic biographies of each Agassiz Professor, and focus on the relationship between the curriculum and the related intellectual experiences of the Agassiz Professors in the development of Chinese studies at the University. Secondary sources provided the historical context and setting for this study.
520 $a The seven Agassiz Professors--John Fryer, Alfred Forke, Edward Thomas Williams, Ferdinand Diedrich Lessing, Yuen Ren Chao, Peter Alexis Boodberg, and Edward Hetzel Schafer--devoted their lives and talents to teaching and doing research in the field of Oriental languages and literature. Their accomplishments marked the development of Oriental languages and literature in American institutions of higher education. The emphasis of the curriculum on the Berkeley campus changed during its development from one of teaching the Chinese language and culture for the purpose of conveying general information, to that of stressing the practical application of the language, and finally to one of understanding Chinese civilization through language obtained from primary sources studied in their original contexts. The interests, innovations, and achievements exhibited by each of the Agassiz Professors as the Department of Oriental Languages and Literature evolved, helped build the University of California, Berkeley into a prestigious American institution of higher education.
