Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Ohio State University, 1987.
This study investigated the question: What is the predominant processing strategy used in short term memory by proficient American readers of Chinese Mandarin as compared to the native reader model? Is it primarily phonological, visual or semantic? On the theory that subjects would reveal their predominant strategies by the kinds of errors they made, two word (character) recognition tasks were constructed: at the word level (Experiment I) and at the sentence level (Experiment II). The word level task contained stimuli presented on slides, and corresponding response items containing varying numbers of distractors (i.e. phonologically, graphically or semantically similar to the stimuli, yet incorrect response items) embedded in the response sheets provided the subjects. Subjects circled on the response sheet the characters they believed they had seen on the slide. At the sentence level, the word recognition task was concealed within a sentence validity task where subjects decided whether statements, also containing the aforementioned types of distractors, were true or false. All three types of distractors were randomly dispersed in equal numbers throughout both experiments among actual correct responses (word level) and correct stimuli (sentence level). Errors were tallied, and based upon the predominance of error made (distractors chosen), an indication of the type of processing strategy was obtained.Subjects--Topical Terms:

A total of 69 slides were administered to 34 subjects in a repeated measures design. The data were subjected to a 2-way analysis of variance.

Results at the character level revealed that natives remember isolated characters phonologically, and perceive characters first and foremost as a representation of sound. Non-natives used a mixed strategy of both phonological and visual processing at the character level. At the sentence level, non-natives used a predominantly visual strategy, whereas natives used a mix of semantic and visual strategies.

Various hypotheses were offered as to why the predominance of visual strategies at the sentence level by the non-natives occurred. Implications of these findings as they relate to current methodology of teaching Chinese were also discussed.
