520 $a Manifests of ships coming into the Philadelphia port and advertisements in New York, Philadelphia, and Boston newspapers between 1784 and 1844 were reviewed and tabulated for this study. Account books, letters, and record books of supercargoes and merchants of the period, as well as early 19th-century inventories, were also examined.
520 $a Thirty-three Chinese import articles were identified as having been available on the open market. These objects were classified in eight groups: wearing apparel and accessories, foodstuffs and drugs, sewing materials, toys and fireworks, matting and blinds, chinaware, furniture and related items, and decorative fancy goods. The study addresses their cost, acceptability, and use by the American middle class during the period. The findings show that these Americans were major consumers of Chinese products.
