The modern anti-utopia has emerged from the gradual recognition that planned utopias are themselves highly flawed and are ideal only for the utopist. A historical survey of anti-utopianism shows that anti-utopian thinkers question the utility of a utopian program and condemn its moral ramifications. The analyses of the desirability and feasibility of planned societies developed separately in the twentieth century into two distinct sub-genres of anti-utopia, which may be called dystopia Y and dystopia X respectively. Dystopia Y aims to expose the nightmarish elements of a utopia underneath its proclaimed ideals, thereby proving that utopia is undesirable; whereas dystopia X extrapolates into the future of a utopia and projects that it will not only fail to deliver its promised benefits by will become a real hell. Dystopia X, which is a hitherto unnoticed sub-genre, is from a generic perspective a continuation of the satirical utopia.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The modern anti-utopia has emerged from the gradual recognition that planned utopias are themselves highly flawed and are ideal only for the utopist. A historical survey of anti-utopianism shows that anti-utopian thinkers question the utility of a utopian program and condemn its moral ramifications. The planned fictional utopia is completely lacking in the Chinese and Japanese traditions, but the satirical utopia in these literatures is a dominant and significant sub-genre. It is logical to expect, therefore, that the modern anti-utopia in these two traditions would resemble the dystopia X in the Western world.

Akutagawa's Kappa, Lao She's Cat Country, and Orwell's Animal Farm are anti-utopian responses to the Westernization of Japan, the democratization of imperial China, and the implementation of communism in Soviet Russia respectively. They exhibit a common anti-utopian theme that practical problems inevitably bring about the corruption of utopian principles. The three authors highlight the fact that human nature is incompatible with any utopian program. Their works are not comprised in the genre dystopia X because Kappa and Cat Country belong to the satirical utopia, and Animal Farm, to the animal fable. In this sense they represent a transition from the satirical utopia to the dystopia X. While most anti-utopian fictions in the twentieth century (including dystopias X and Y) place the emphasis on the final phase of a society going through an experimental program, the works of Akutagawa, Lao She, and Orwell focus on the transition from reality to the final dystopian stage. In this way, they challenge the feasibility of any utopian programs.
