Thesis (Ph.D.)--Northwestern University, 1986.
This research employed firm level microeconomic analysis to study the technological evolution of the consumer electronics industry in Taiwan, with special emphasis on the CRT (cathode-ray tube)-related product industries. The study addressed these issues: (1) What types of technological change occurred in firms in Taiwan? (How was technological change affected by microeconomic considerations e.g., factor endowment etc. , macroeconomic conditions e.g., government policies and market structure?) (2) What technological capabilities were developed by individual firms? (3) What technological strategies were followed by the firm? And (4) what patterns of technological change developed in the industry.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Different manufacturers acquired their technologies through different channels. But all of them acquired their Technological capabilities by devoting technological efforts to adapting, mastering and developing the borrowed technologies. Different types of efforts lead to different mastery of technologies. One of the technological characteristics attached to the manufacturing of consumer electronics products is the minor requirement of infrastructure investment. This characteristic contributed to the majority of technological advances centering around disembodied changes, including development of sound production systems and design capability.

Manufacturers in Taiwan built up their operations on the basis of highly idiosyncratic technologies reflecting the nature and intensity of local market imperfections, prevailing physical scarcities, factor price differentials, degree of development of the network of subcontractors and size of the market etc. Therefore, technological change is a localized concept in our research. Technology transfer itself is important, but to adapt, master and develop the borrowed technologies according to the specific economic environment is equally, in many cases even more, important to the development of technological foundation in the local economy. Technology itself can be transferred from anywhere, but the optimal performance attached to the technology can be achieved only by devoting manufacturers' efforts to mastering the technology. As a result, the endeavor devoted to R&D activities is the key to an improved economic environment which is a necessary condition to motivate multinational companies to transfer more advanced technologies.
