Thesis (M.A.)--Stephen F. Austin State University, 1989.
A study of the Chinese in the writings of several prominent American authors, Bret Harte and Mark Twain, Frank Norris, John Steinbeck, and Pearl S. Buck, shows what sort of Chinese characters the five authors portrayed, how authentic they are, and what the attitudes of the authors toward their Chinese characters and toward the Chinese in general are. They set their stories in different places and at different times. Their understandings of the Chinese differ, so do their attitudes. Some of the Chinese characters are stereotyped and distorted, and some are quite individualized and portrayed with credibility. Some of the events are exaggerated to create sensation and some are true to life. By tracing the Chinese characters of important writers, this thesis can increase understanding of the Chinese as they really are both in China and in America.Subjects--Topical Terms:
