Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2017.
The purpose of this study was to examine primary care physicians' intention to use telemental health care services in the treatment of their patients. More specifically, this study examined the relationship between primary care physicians' characteristics (i.e., age, gender, location, and years in practice), computer use, awareness of telemental health care services, attitude towards such services, perceived ease of use of such services, and perceived usefulness of such services and the criterion variable, primary care physicians' intention to use such services in the treatment of their patients. The theory of reasoned action (TRA) and the technology acceptance model (TAM) were integrated to see whether one's personal attitudes about the use of technology can be extended to the referral to a third person for services that involve technology. The study utilized a descriptive (non-experimental) survey to collect the necessary data. The sample for this study consisted of 98 primary care physicians specializing in family practice, general practice, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, or pediatrics. Regression analysis was utilized to determine the statistical significance of predictor variables in their ability to predict the criterion variable. The results did indicate that each of the nine predictor variables (i.e., age, gender, location, years in practice, computer use, awareness, attitude, perceived ease of use, and perceived usefulness) that were explored could be used to predict primary care physician acceptance of telemental health care services in the treatment of their patients. However, only attitude and perceived usefulness were found to have significant relationships with a physician's intention to use telemental health care services.
