Thesis (M.A.)--Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2017.
Through both hermeneutic and heuristic exploration, this thesis examines how humor can be used to increase trauma survivors' threshold of tolerance. In psychotherapy, the subjects of trauma and humor are seldom understood as cooperative in the treatment of mental illness. However, research shows that the appropriate therapeutic application of experiencing humor favorably affects mental and physical health by increasing pain tolerance, resilience, and immunity to pathology. Common treatment modalities for trauma aim to increase the individual's tolerance for painful memories, but neglect the formative intellectual and emotional benefits that humor bolsters. This thesis explores how treating trauma without humor can exacerbate symptoms, negatively impacting the treatment process and an individual's ability to tolerate the experience. Informed, clinical exploration is offered to support the use of humor within the therapeutic setting.
