Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, 2017.
The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the leadership behaviors of individuals with science, technical, engineering, and math (STEM) education and training who have patents that have been filed, allowed, and/or issued. These leaders were compared with the leadership behaviors of individuals with STEM education and training who do not have patents filed, allowed, or issued. These groups are referred to as the inventor and noninventor groups. The data used for this study were archived data from a Department of Defense (DoD) organization. Leadership behaviors were measured by the Leadership Practice Inventory (LPI), which is a reliable and valid multirater feedback instrument. A MANOVA was used to analyze the difference between the inventor and noninventor group. An ANOVA was also conducted to independently explore the five leadership practices measured by the LPI. Based on a p value of .05 the null hypothesis could not be rejected. This means there was no evidence that a difference in leadership behaviors was demonstrated by the inventor group or noninventor group as perceived by the self and manager. However, the fourth leadership practice, enable others to act, had a nearly significant p value and the existing literature supports the importance of this practice as it relates to innovation. Given this a strong case is provided for the importance of enabling others to act as it relates to inventions and innovation. Limitations to the research are the sample size and the timing of data collection.
