Thesis (M.S.)--Southern Connecticut State University, 2017.
2016 was a tumultuous year that saw populism rise throughout the world in response to decades of simmering economic, social, and ethnic tensions. It proved to be a year in which the established political tendencies of two of the world's most successful democracies, the United States and the United Kingdom, saw their foundations shaken to the core, first by the shock result in the June referendum on the European Union and then again in November when Donald Trump defied all convention to be elected the forty-fifth President. This paper examines the theoretical and historical underpinnings that brought Western democracy to this point of open revolt and offers thoughts on where democracy goes from here.
