Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2012.
This qualitative, phenomenological study of prisoner reentry explores the lived experiences of wives who are reunited with their husbands after the husband's incarceration. The sample will consist of 10 wives of ex-offenders residing in Hinds County, MS, who are also working mothers. Wives married to ex-offenders have been shown to have a major influence in helping their husbands make a successful reintegration from prison into the free world and often occupy multiple roles during the reentry transition (Fishman, 1990; Naser & Visher, 2006; Petersilia, 2005). Therefore, examining wives' experiences will be paramount in gaining more insight into the family dynamics of prisoner reentry. Using a social constructivist paradigm and qualitative phenomenology (Mertens, 2005; Moustakas, 1994) the present study will assess the relational dynamics of prisoner reentry. The primary goal of the research study is to understand the lived experience of wives of ex-offenders as they re-establish the family system during prisoner reentry. In-depth, unstructured interviews will be conducted with the wives to explore their thoughts, feelings and unique experiences within the context of family functioning. Thematic analysis (Moustakas, 1994 & 1999) will be used to identify meaning units and significant themes among the wives' experiences (Moustakas, 1994 & 1999). Understanding the essence of wives' experiences will help gain insight into the impact of post-prison adjustment on family functioning. Furthermore, emphasizing the relational dynamics of prisoner reentry will help the field of social services become more cognizant of the needs of families (specifically wives) upon reentry, including factors necessary to help them adjust and function adaptively in their multiple roles.
