This study originates in my desire to situate sustainability thinking in the education system in Ontario in general, and in my teaching practice in particular. In many ways this study mirrors my path as an elementary school teacher in Ontario, and more recently as a graduate student studying sustainability education. It represents my efforts to meaningfully connect my experience in graduate school to my work in classrooms in Ontario. In this regard, I have looked back perhaps as much as I have looked ahead to find direction.

In this study I trace some of the forces which influence elementary school classrooms such as mine. I also examine critically the evolution of Education for Sustainable Development and issues which have shaped the sustainability debate.

Finally, I turn to storytelling to find a meaningful opportunity to situate the subject of sustainability in my own teaching practice. If fundamental themes - such as seven generations thinking, and the short sightedness of consumption and environmental degradation are conveyed in story form, could a more accessible form of dialogue regarding sustainability take place at the elementary school level?
