This research study examined the performance of students on the Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) based on their performance on the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) in mathematics and reading. The use of the MAP assessment was an effective tool to predict the success of students on the CRCT in mathematics and reading. Because schools are under pressure to meet the NCLB requirements, it is necessary to know if predictor assessments such as the MAP are truly reliable forecasters of performance on state standardized assessments. The purpose of this study was to predict the relationship between the performance of students as reflected through the Georgia CRCT and MAP in mathematics and reading. A predictive correlational research design was used. The target population for the records of the study was composed of seventh and eighth grade students from two small-sized middle schools in a rural district in Georgia who took the MAP and the CRCT assessments. The results of the regression analyses showed that there was indeed a statistically significant influence brought by the MAP scores on the CRCT scores for both reading and math. Because the current study showed the influence of MAP scores on CRCT scores in reading and math, the educators can design lessons, which will focus on specific topics based on the MAP scores. A strategy based on such focus should result in improved student performance on the CRCT in mathematics and reading. Thus, schools could improve their No Child Left Behind performances, and the MAP test scores could be a progress monitoring tool used in order to gage the knowledge and skill acquisitions of the specific topics.
