As students reach adolescence, research shows there is a decline in physical activity which can lead to childhood obesity. The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to explore the reasons why junior high students lack motivation to participate in physical education and how a school district will meet the needs of a diverse student body. The self-determination theory and achievement goal theory were used in this research study. A questionnaire was administered to 300 randomly selected students of various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds from four junior high schools in the school district. The questionnaire consisted of closed and open-ended questions asking students why they liked and disliked participating in physical education. Student responses to the Likert-scale questions were analyzed by using the mean and frequency of response. The data from the open-ended questions were analyzed via constant comparison and by coding common words to create categories and subcategories for emerging themes. Quantitative findings indicated that 75% of students were motivated to participate in physical education. Qualitative findings revealed that students enjoyed physical education because of social interactions with peers, learning new games, and having a choice of activities. Students least enjoyed physical education because of fitness activities, peer issues, and assessments. This program evaluation will provide a curriculum model which can be used by the entire school district to increase student physical activity to reduce the risk of childhood obesity and diabetes. The results will help teachers provide a positive environment which will ensure student success in class. Improving instruction, providing student choice, and using meaningful assessments, the physical education program will improve and serve as a model for other schools.
