Youth violence is an important public health problem. Reducing violence in middle school students requires combining the efforts of public health researchers and educators to reduce aggression. Aggressive behaviors may be deterred by providing more opportunities for structured physical activities during the middle school day. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a short-term program that increased physical activity (Instant Recess) was associated with a decrease in the level of aggressive behaviors in middle school students. The study design, which was guided by social cognitive theory and the social learning theory combined with environmental modification, was a retrospective comparison of two transient middle schools: School A (the intervention school) and School B (a comparison site where there was no intervention). The data sets obtained for this retrospective study contained disciplinary records of 118 children collected by the school district for the year 2010. Bullying, fighting, challenging teacher authority, and total violence were the categories selected for analysis. Statistical methods included analysis of descriptive statistics, repeated measures analysis of variance, t-tests analysis, and Poisson regression analysis. Changes in aggressive behavior did not differ significantly between the two schools in this sample. These findings do not support the hypothesis that a short-term physical activity intervention might reduce aggressive behaviors in schools. The importance of this research is that it adds to the body of information available about school interventions intended to reduce aggressive behaviors and points to a need for additional research.
