Thesis (Psy.D.)--Alliant International University, 2012.
Once believed to be a mild injury that heals itself, current research is beginning to shed light on the seriousness of concussions and the possible life-long implications for the student-athletes who experience them. As a result of this current research and the many personal accounts of serious injuries sustained by athletes of all levels, several states are pushing for concussion legislation that would make it mandatory for school districts to have a formalized concussion management policy in place. In order to meet this need, a resource manual titled, Putting Our Heads Together, was developed for administrators and educators to aid with the development of school-based concussion management policies. The resource manual was reviewed by expert and field test reviewers who provided feedback regarding the handbook's content, usefulness, and effectiveness. Results indicated that 100% of both the expert and field test reviewers found the manual to be beneficial for administrators and educators in addressing sports-related concussions within the high school setting. Distribution of this resource manual can be an effective and budget-friendly way for school districts to comply with concussion legislation and for high schools to meet the needs of their student-athletes who experience concussion as a result of participation in school-sponsored athletic programs.
