Bullying behavior affects most school aged children and has psychosocial ramifications for all people involved. The purpose of this project was to develop a theoretical model for adventure based counseling as an intervention for bullying. Specifically, the concepts of cohesion, resiliency, and self-efficacy were presented as the base for the theoretical model. Through a comprehensive review of the literature, as well as interviews with experts in the field, this review explores in detail the applicability of adventure-based counseling as a bullying intervention. Characteristics of bullies, victims, and bystanders were discussed, as well as how the dynamics of the peer group influence bullying. School-based interventions that focus on the peer group were reviewed, as well the concept of scapegoating in more traditional forms of group therapy. The concepts of cohesion, resiliency, and self-efficacy were reviewed in the context of bullying. Next, an overview was given of adventure based counseling, and evidence was provided that cohesion, resiliency, and self-efficacy can be developed through adventure-based interventions. The current literature about adventure based counseling as an intervention for bullying was presented and critiqued. The clinical implications, limitations, and suggestions for future research were also discussed.
