Children may not be aware of the environmental dangers threatening the planet or ways their behavior can protect or harm nature. The purpose of this study was to explore the role of an 8-week school garden and environmental lesson intervention (n=67) compared to no intervention (n=20) on environmental knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of fifth grade students. A survey was given in March and again in May (9 weeks) to determine if the intervention improved outcomes. For the intervention group, a significant improvement (p < 0.036) was found in the number of students who believed "pollution damages the Earth", and positive trends were seen in all measures of attitudes and behaviors; and knowledge increased 33%. It was concluded that utilization of a school garden and environmental lessons was effective for increasing environmental awareness in fifth grade students.
