Thesis (M.A.)--The William Paterson University of New Jersey, 2012.
Existing literature on cyberbullying has mostly focused on the individual, by investigating occurrence rates, victimization, and psychological and health effects. In this paper, I ask more fundamental questions about children's socialization into norms and proper behaviors relevant to technology use, and the responsibility of teaching them technology norms and values. The paper is based on a qualitative exploratory research design. The sample was a non--probability, purposive sample of twenty--one individuals who are involved in middle school and high school aged children, including parents, students, teachers and school administrators. Key findings included: the institution of education must take a larger responsibility in teaching norms and values in technology communication, family should be the forerunners of teaching the new technology to their children rather than children teaching children, and, finally, the society, through laws, need to address consequences for technology misuse and cyberbullying.
