Scope and Method of Study: Environmental stewardship for a sustainable living in the future has always been the main goal of Environmental Education (EE) globally. This research study intends to know if Our Environment, the textbook used by 10th graders in Maharashtra State Board, India promotes the values of environmental stewardship as mentioned in the preface page of the textbook. An interlinked framework of for analysis environmental stewardship was developed where its three components were coined as Content, Action, and Local Connection. The research design used for Our Environment analysis was the concurrent triangulation strategy for which the quantitative data was obtained by textbook analysis, and the qualitative data was collected by conducting email interviews of high school EE teachers and textbook authors for Maharashtra State Board.

Findings and Conclusions: Teachers and students both have long relied on textbooks as a basic study material for EE. The results of the analysis of the four essential elements of Our Environment (exercises, photographs, activities, and important Think notes) convey that the textbook needs to emphasize more on Action and Local Connection. The emails interviews also suggest that the textbook needs to have a clearer explanation of environmental concepts, with an emphasis on easy hands-on activities, more field trips, and local specific issues pertaining to the state. Thus, the qualitative and quantitative results equally convey the message that the implementation of the above recommendations might be beneficial to promote environmental stewardship among the 10 th graders of Maharashtra State. Any form of education in schools is not complete without the use of textbooks. Even a subject such as Environmental Science (addressed as Environmental Education or EE in Maharashtra State, India) which is mainly meant to be an outdoor subject, needs written material to guide the students.
