With the growing rate of childhood obesity, it is crucial for physical educators to fully comply with standards outlined by the National Association of Sport and Physical Education to ensure that students obtain the skills and knowledge necessary for success in physical education through high school, as well as to develop lifelong, healthy habits. Twenty three male and female students in fourth, fifth, and sixth grade, attending a rural, private school in Illinois, were utilized within this exploratory study. The Physical Self-Description Questionnaire-Short Form was utilized to measure perceived competence in the following areas: strength, flexibility, endurance, health, coordination, physical activity, body fat, global physical, global self-esteem, appearance, and sport activity. Students were surveyed during their physical education class once parental and informed consent was received. Students were given 30 minutes to complete the survey. Data collection included the use of the mean only due to the low number of participants.

Following completion of data collection, data was analyzed and comparisons were made across males and females and across fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students. Overall, it was found that females displayed a higher mean score than males across all subdomains except strength. When comparing the eleven subdomains across grade levels, several inconsistencies were observed and need further investigation.
