Thesis (M.S.)--Kean University, 2012.
Light-to-heavy (LTH or ascending pyramid) and heavy-to-light (HTL or descending pyramid) resistance training protocols have been investigated and used to improve muscular strength, power and endurance. Previous studies which compared LTH and HTL protocols utilized a 10RM pre-test for prescribed training loads, but this study utilized a 1RM pre-test. The purpose of this study was to evaluate differences in muscular strength and endurance by performing either an ascending or descending 3 set protocol based on pre-tested 1RM. Eleven (n = 11) male high school wrestlers, ages 14--17 years, participated in a resistance training program twice-per-week on non-consecutive days for 8 weeks. A mixed-between-within ANOVA analysis was used to examine pre-test and post-test differences in 1RM muscular strength and muscular endurance (reps with 90% of 1RM) on vertical bench press and leg press machines. The level of significance was set at (p < 0.05). Pre-test to post-test differences in 1RM were as follows: vertical bench press showed no differences within groups or between groups. Leg press was significant in LTH, HTL and Control groups (p = .002), with the LTH group showing significantly higher post-test scores (p = .036), but the HTL group showing a trend toward significance (p = 0.4) from pre-test to post-test. Number of reps performed during initial session compared to peak session with 90% of 1RM were as follows: Both LTH and HTL groups showed significance on vertical bench press. No significant between-group differences were found, but a trend toward significance (p = .1) was found (favoring HTL group). Both LTH and HTL groups showed significance on leg press, but no between-group differences were found. Possible trends toward significance found in this study seem to suggest performing a 3 set HTL protocol based upon a 1RM pre-test may be more beneficial than performing a LTH protocol for improving 1RM leg press strength and 90% of 1RM vertical bench press muscular endurance, but more research and larger sample sizes are needed to determine this.
