Thesis (M.A.)--Saybrook University, 2012.
In this thesis, I asked: What are the effects of using proven techniques in music therapy with professional songwriters? The study explored the experiences of three professional singer/songwriters who exercised the working model described by Toni Day in Songwriting. I video recorded and transcribed four one-hour sessions in which I facilitated brainstorming, lyric creation, music writing, and recording. The participant's song was recorded onto a CD. Then I conducted post-intervention interviews designed to understand the participant's experiences. Interviews were coded using Kvale's thematic analysis. Songwriter participants reported feeling an improvement in their organization, ability to focus, confidence in songwriting ability, and acceleration in the time it took to write a song from start to finish. The overall positive regard for the model indicates that music therapy techniques may help unfocused or stagnant songwriters to become more productive.
