While there is a body of research addressing the topic of stigma in many mental health diagnoses, there is little research examining stigma in the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) diagnosis. Given the increased rates of this diagnosis in children, it is important to explore whether stigma exists and if so, how it impacts the lives of children with this diagnosis. This study explored levels of perceived stigma in terms of self-esteem, peer relationships, academic performance, and acting out behavior. This study looked to address stigma from the perspectives of those closest to children diagnosed with ADHD: parents, counselors, medical doctors, and teachers. The study consisted of 141 participants who had either taught, treated, or parented a child or adolescent with ADHD. The majority of participants were teachers and parents. Participants completed demographic questions and the ADHD Stigma Questionnaire (Kellison, et al., 2010). Results showed that there was a statistically significant increase in the distribution of participants who positively endorsed stigma in the ADHD diagnosis. In addition, participants shared that the most significant impact of stigma was seen in a child's self-esteem and their willingness to initiate or comply with treatment or medication. The behavior that appeared to be least affected, due to perceived stigma, was acting out behavior at home or school.
