This study considered associations between instructional quality and emotional support in predicting growth in receptive and expressive vocabulary performance for English language learners and native English speakers in preschool. Instructional quality, measured as concept development, language modeling, and quality of feedback, and emotional support were assessed using The Classroom Assessment Scoring Systems for Pre-K classrooms. Emotional support emerged as a significant moderator of the association between subscales of instructional quality and vocabulary performance. Analyses indicated that for receptive vocabulary outcomes children in classrooms with low to moderate emotional support benefited the most from quality of feedback. Associations for both concept development and language modeling were most strongly related to expressive vocabulary outcomes at moderate to high levels of emotional support. Discussion focuses on application of findings to practice in preschool classrooms.
