This study utilized a qualitative phenomenological design to examine experiences of design professionals engaged in the successful commercialization of 100% organic cotton textile products. The study examined participants' lived and perceived experiences through individual in-depth interviews utilizing open-ended interview questions. Participants shared details related to the successful commercialization of finished textile products, provided insight into how they build and share knowledge, and contributed creative thinking and development solutions employed during the successful design and development of 100% organic cotton textile products. Results uncovered seven key themes related to the design and development of 100% organic cotton textile products. Four themes were specifically related to the actual design process; material selection, color and print options, make method decisions, and supply chain partnerships. Three themes were related to the role of the designer: self-identity as a sustainable designer, the value of knowledge building and knowledge sharing, and the need for expanded consumer education. The findings of this study contribute tactical knowledge, information, and procedures that aspiring sustainable design and development professionals may employ to positively impact the 100% organic textile products marketplace. Findings may be of interest to educators and environmental activists in the further development of academic programs and consumer campaigns that may increase offerings of 100% organic cotton textiles in the marketplace. Findings may serve as a foundation for additional research related to uncovering additional best practices employed by design professionals located outside of the United States, in countries with a mature organic textiles marketplace.
