Thesis (M.A.)--Hofstra University, 2017.
Statement Analysis is a method used by law enforcement that aims to discover whether a person is being deceptive or truthful in his or her written statement. This study examined the Statement Analysis features supported in literature by seven or more scholars and practitioners: First Person Singular Pronoun, Text Bridges, Balance of Statement Structure, Inappropriate Verb Tense, Group Pronouns, Extraneous Details, Qualifiers, Account of Emotions Throughout and/or After the Climax, Spontaneous Negations, and Temporal and Spatial Contextual Embedding. The research question is: how can linguistic theories and established linguistic analysis methods help explain the linguistic features flagged as deceptive or truthful language in criminal investigators' Statement Analysis? It is hypothesized that the ten most advocated features in Statement Analysis can be explained through two major linguistic theories: Cooperative Principle and Speech Act Theory. Also hypothesized is that the application of Critical Discourse Analysis, Genre Analysis, Narrative Analysis, and Appraisal Analysis can provide a parallel analysis to Statement Analysis, but these analysis methods allow the analyst to uncover more underlying meaning than Statement Analysis. Results showed that every feature could be explained through linguistic theory except Account of Emotions Throughout and/or After the Climax, and linguistics only partially supported the First Person Singular Pronoun criterion while partly discounting the Inappropriate Verb Tense criterion. Implications of the research are discussed.
