There is a gap in knowledge regarding why African-American-owned businesses are less successful than Caucasian-owned businesses and the businesses of other minority groups. Building a successful business is a challenging task for leaders of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Exploring factors that influence the failure, success, and sustainability of African American SMEs helped with knowledge creation and the transfer of successful information and may lead to increased success within this business segment. Because African American business owners are likely to start businesses in urban areas, the failure of their business aspirations often leads to increased crime and racial tension in urban areas. This study involved exploring organizational knowledge theory to determine failure, success, or sustainability within the organizations while reviewing their knowledge creation, storage, and transfer to organizational stakeholders. Organizational knowledge theory indicated that sustainability may decrease when knowledge transfer is at risk. This qualitative, multiple-case study adds to the body of knowledge on successful tactics for African American businesses and gives foundational information to help business owners and government leaders understand the challenges faced by African American business owners. The participants were African American business owners with at least a 51% majority ownership within their enterprise. Data were collected through interviews, research, and reviewing archival information. The results indicate the importance of human resource attraction and retention. Unsuccessful business owners noted the inability to secure funding and diversify as a key reason for their failure. Recommendations were formulated to ensure entrepreneurs obtain adequate funding in their budget for the training, attraction, and retention of employees to increase their chances for success. Recommendations were shared for governmental entities such as the U.S. Small Business Administration to allocate additional funding for training and credit options for African American SMEs to provide support for increased sustainability and ideas for future research regarding how business type, business size, or business environment influence the failure, success, and sustainability of African-American-owned SMEs.
