As an international phenomenon, school bullying negatively impacts children, adolescents, and young adults all over the world. In China, bullying problem has drawn increased research attention in recent years. Research on school bullying depends on valid and reliable measurement of bullying and victimization behaviors. Unfortunately, however, psychometrically sound bullying measures for use with Chinese students are lacking. The Revised Peer Experiences Questionnaire (RPEQ) is a widely used self-report bullying measure that has demonstrated adequate psychometric properties in students from the United States and several European countries. In the current study, the psychometric properties and factor structure of the RPEQ were examined with a sample of Chinese college students.

Participants (n = 397, Mage = 19.24) were recruited from a public university located in Beijing, China. Results from psychometric analysis supported the internal consistency, concurrent validity, and divergent validity of the RPEQ Bullying and Victimization scales. Specifically, the Cronbach's alphas of the RPEQ Bullying and Victimization scales were found to be adequate (> .70). Both scales also demonstrated moderate correlations with two other bullying measures and very weak to weak correlations with a life satisfaction scale. To examine the factor structure of the RPEQ, several goodness-of-fit indices were computed. For the RPEQ Victimization scale, all the indices suggested that the three-factor model is an appropriate fit for the data. For the RPEQ Bullying scale, some goodness-of-fit indices supported a three factor model. After the item four on the Bullying scale was deleted, the model fit was improved. Aside from the psychometric evidence of the RPEQ, some other findings were also discussed. For example, relational bullying and victimization were the most prevalent types among Chinese college students, whereas cyber bullying and victimization had the lowest prevalence rates. In addition, male students reported higher levels of cyber victimization and students from Beijing reported less involvement of bullying and victimization. Overall, the RPEQ demonstrated acceptable psychometric properties among Chinese college students. Implication for applied practice, limitations and future directions were discussed.
