Technology has changed the way education is delivered. People old and young could earn a degree in several ways; the traditional way by entering a brick and mortar building, hybrid, or completely online. Technology provides much flexibility for those wanting to attend college to either earn an additional degree, to sharpen skills, or to earn their first degree. There has been an influx of students entering college and the majority of these students are nontraditional adult learners. These adult learners need the flexibility provided by colleges that offer degree programs that are online. These nontraditional adult learners came into programs with a wealth of experiential knowledge; therefore, these students needed to be highly engaged or they will get bored and dropout. The problem with online degree programs is high attrition rates. So, while enrollment rates are high for online programs, many adults drop out before the end of the semester. The purpose of this quantitative, quasi-experimental study was to investigate whether increasing engagement in an online learning course reduced the attrition rate and increase student satisfaction among online adult learners. Campus-wide recruitment was conducted to solicit participants for this study. Data for 86 participants were analyzed to address the research questions guiding this study. The results from the chi-square analysis, V=0.10, p=0.38 indicated that there was no association between course enrollment and retention. For the second research question, a one-way ANOVA was conducted. The results of the ANOVA were not significant, F(1,84) = 0.62, p=0.43, indicating the differences among the values of overall satisfaction were all similar. Recommendations for future study include (a) performing like studies at similar institutions using the methodology and dependent variables used in this study; and (b) regression analysis studies focused on identifying traits and characteristics found in learners that successfully completed online courses.
