In light of the fact, research has shown, that autism stems from an organic brain dysfunction and has serious impact on an individual's day-to-day functioning; the caregiving experience is of particular interest. While the implementation of intensive intervention services within the home, no doubt, has a profound impact on the familial lives of those caring for and living with an individual with autism, currently, very little is known about how caregivers of autistic children describe the impact they have on familial life. This study, therefore, contributes to the limited existing knowledge about how caregivers of autistic children describe service intervention experiences and, more specifically, how these services effect the lives of their family. In order to understand the experiences of parents and caregivers dealing with complex, and often emotionally intense situations, the researcher chose a qualitative research approach. Qualitative research is defined by its examination of characteristics or qualities that are not easily synthesized into quantifiable data (Leedy & Ormrod, 2010). This qualitative approach examines the experiences and viewpoints of caregivers responsible for looking after autistic children who are undergoing intensive behavioral interventions within the home. Significant findings include: that while intensive therapeutic interventions have an overall positive effect on family life, caregivers are in need of additional supports such as, financial support, respite care, and social-emotional support.
