Religious and spiritual coping has been found to be associated with physical and mental health and wellbeing. Through religion and spirituality, behavioral prescriptions and proscriptions are provided to guide individuals' behaviors and ways of coping. The primary purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to investigate the lived experiences of live-in domestic workers or caregivers as they cope with their stressors and challenges using religion and spiritual strategies in relation to their perceived health. The phenomenological method was used to shed light on the perceptions of the live-in domestic workers or caregivers regarding their religious and spiritual coping as it related to their physical and mental health. Social cognitive theory was used as a theoretical lens to understand experiences and perceptions relating to self-efficacy and self-regulation. Participants noted the ability to regulate and control their own actions based on internal beliefs and by what was present in the external environment. Data were collected from a purposefully selected sample of Filipina live-in domestic workers currently living and working in small towns in Alberta, Canada. In this study, the researcher found that the stressors experienced by the participants were specific to their isolated geographical locations. The locations affected their ability to form social networks and the lack of public transportation affected their ability to get around. The researcher also found that the participants experience loneliness and homesickness common to all foreign workers. In this study, the researcher also found that the FDWs pointed to their faith rather than the religion itself when describing the role of their religion and spirituality on their health. Additional research can address comparison of FDWs who work for the first time in Canada versus in other countries where FDWs may be treated differently. Additionally, researchers can investigate how stress is experienced and how FDWs perceive their religion and spirituality vis-a-vis their coping skills and their health.
