Stroke is a leading cause of impairment world-wide. For the millions of unfortunate people who experience this neurological insult each year, overcoming hemiparesis to regain mobility often becomes a primary, though tremendously difficult, goal. Rehabilitation outcomes are variable, often incomplete, and inefficient, as understanding of the complex motor control and sensory deficits that impede balance and walking is limited. This dissertation aims to improve that understanding, and ultimately patient outcomes, by investigating an unconventional approach to characterizing and potentially overcoming impairment. The force of the ground on the feet (F) reflects the neuromuscular coordination strategy of the lower-limb joint torques and must meet certain physical requirements to keep the body upright while bipedal. A specific deviation in control of F is suspected following stroke, and thus, is examined here as a mechanism of impairment. A theoretical foundation for such impairment is provided, followed by the design of a robotic walking environment to investigate for such control and potentially retrain appropriate F. The F during standing and dynamic bipedal tasks is characterized, revealing underlying control and differences between the paretic and non-paretic limbs of individuals with hemiparesis. These characteristics have promising implications for understanding and assessing impairment as well as informing rehabilitation metrics and methods.
