Crossing Over: From the Yiddish Rialto to the American Stage positions the study of Yiddish theater as essential to a more complete understanding of the American theatrical institution. It analyzes the ways in which Yiddish drama, performance, artists, and audiences transitioned from the American Yiddish theater to the mainstream American English-language stage. Yiddish actors such as Bertha Kalich and Jacob Ben-Ami, who were proponents of the realistic school of acting developed in Europe, found fame in America by distinguishing themselves from the melodramatic actors that dominated the Broadway theater landscape. Set designers like Boris Aronson, trained in the various European artistic movements, redefined the design aesthetic of the American theater. And Yiddish playwrights such as David Pinski and Jacob Gordin, through translation and adaptation, found expression on the mainstream stage, thus positioning the Yiddish drama firmly within the realm of high theater art. All of these practitioners helped shape dramatic and theatrical aesthetics and tastes that remain important components of the American stage today. Just as the question, "What is an American?" elicits a different response now than it did two generations ago, the question, "What is the American theater?" also requires readjustment. By exploring the Yiddish stage in America as a site of crossover, this dissertation shows that it was not merely an ethnic theater that existed on the margins, but rather an important cultural phenomenon that was part and parcel of the American theatrical institution.
