Thesis (Ed.D.)--Teachers College, Columbia University, 1992.
This thesis examines the nature and extent of discriminatory gender stereotyping in Taiwan's elementary school textbooks in the context of Taiwan's ideological setting. The main part of this study is a survey on elementary school Chinese Readers that are currently used in Taiwan. The method of content analysis is employed to examine the male and female characters who appear in these Readers. Specifically, the following aspects are looked at: (1) the gender of the characters who appear in the texts; (2) the occupational or social roles, including family roles, assigned to the characters in the texts; (3) the traits or qualities ascribed to the characters in the texts. The results show an imbalance in the representation of the two genders in these textbooks, with male representation far greater than that of female. Female characters are overwhelmingly given family roles but rarely non-family occupational or social ones--and in the few cases when such roles are given, they typically fall into the "quiet and gentle" category, such as teachers. In contrast, the roles ascribed to males are many, and they reflect the whole spectrum of social roles, though with a high concentration at the "action-related" and "externally-oriented" end. In terms of traits or qualities, females are portrayed as completely "feminine" in disposition or behavior. Males in contrast are mostly depicted as "masculine", though a healthy dose of "feminine" characteristics is sprinkled in to present a slightly more balanced image. The thesis argues that such gender stereotypes in Taiwan's textbooks are inaccurate and they are prejudiced against females mainly. They therefore represent a big obstacle that women in Taiwan must overcome in order to realize their full potential in life.Subjects--Topical Terms:
