The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recently estimated that there were from 25,000 to 35,000 reported cases of HIV-infected college students in the United States. It was believed that if students at Northern Arizona University personally knew someone who is HIV-infected, they would accurately perceive their personal levels of risk for contracting HIV; and would, therefore, be more likely to take preventive measures to reduce their chances of contracting HIV.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The research design was multimethod and included both quantitative and qualitative methods. A quasi-experimental design with one experimental group was conducted at Northern Arizona University (NAU). Pretest, posttest and follow-up questionnaires were administered in the spring of 1993 to students attending Sociology 316, "The Sociology of Sexuality." The treatment involved a presentation and discussion by a male, heterosexual teaching assistant in Sociology 316, who disclosed his HIV-infected status to the class. Data analysis included respondent demographics, summary descriptive statistics and inferential statistics (factor analysis, chi-square, and Wilcoxon Matched-Pairs Signed-Rank Test).

Alpha was set at.05 and the results did not show significance. Students in the Sociology 316 course at Northern Arizona University did not self-report changes in their sexual behaviors, despite personally knowing someone who is heterosexual and HIV-infected. Educational efforts have been successful in presenting students with accurate information regarding AIDS. The college students who participated in the study showed a high level of understanding about AIDS and its modes of transmission. Future educational efforts must be aimed at assisting students in accurately assessing their personal risk of contracting HIV, motivating students to take necessary precautionary measures against the contraction of HIV, and exposing students to repetitive information by same-age peers who contracted the HIV virus through heterosexual contact and are willing to share this information with their peers.
